Recognition of Disability Month: Celebrating Inclusion, Strength, and Community
Hello! My name is Elaine, and I am a 20-year-old who believes every person deserves to be seen, respected, and included. Recognition of Disability Month is an important opportunity to celebrate the strength, experiences, and contributions of people with disabilities while learning how to build more welcoming communities.
In my free time, I enjoy playing and modding video games on my Steam Deck, going dancing when I feel social, spending time with cats and dogs, visiting the beach, and appreciating Mexican artisanal clothing. These interests are part of what makes me who I am, and they remind me that every person has a unique story, identity, and way of connecting with the world.
I am inspired by Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and by people who use their voices to create positive change. I also have big dreams of learning Spanish and providing medical support in Latin America, especially for women and children. Those goals motivate me to keep learning, growing, and looking for ways to serve my community.
Recognizing disability means more than noticing differences. It means listening, removing barriers, respecting individual choices, and making sure people can participate fully in school, work, health care, recreation, and community life. Inclusion should be part of everyday life—not something we remember only during one month.
This month, I hope we can all take time to learn from one another, challenge assumptions, and support accessibility and belonging. Every opportunity to understand, help, and grow can move us closer to a community where everyone has the chance to thrive.
